Roles Rewritten
A downloadable game
Roles Rewritten is a story-driven puzzle adventure set in a magical Arabian palace inspired by the tales of One Thousand and One Nights. You play as a clever thief who is captured and imprisoned, but must use creative thinking, environmental puzzles, and unexpected allies to escape. The main gameplay loop revolves around observing your surroundings, forming unconventional escape plans, and interacting with the world in surprising ways. What makes the game unique is its reversal of traditional roles, where the thief becomes the hero of the story, and the princess ultimately becomes the one who saves him.
The game reflects the “Roles Reversed” theme primarily through its story and gameplay structure. While the player begins as a captured thief, the narrative gradually subverts expectations by shifting traditional hero and victim roles, ultimately reversing who holds power and control. This theme is reinforced mechanically using Unreal Engine’s structures, enumerators, and data tables to dynamically manage role states and character interactions throughout the experience. The reversal is therefore not only present in the story, but also embedded directly into the game’s systems and player progression.
The game begins with the player controlling a thief who must escape from guards through chase sequences and environmental interactions. After being captured, the player uses creative solutions, like luring an elephant to break the jail walls, to escape. At certain points, the roles reverse and the player takes control of other characters with new objectives, such as hunting or rescuing the thief. The gameplay flows linearly through story-driven segments, with each section introducing a new goal that supports the overall role-reversal theme.
